The amount of children suffering from Childhood Cancer is staggering and it grows every year. There are many kinds of childhood cancer just like with adults and therefore there are different ways to combat and treat each disease. As a mother myself the thought of this impacting one of my own children is beyond gut wrenching. It’s hard to put into words because I see the beautiful children and their families who are fighting and my heart truly aches for them. I see and (briefly imagine) their pain, the sorrow of looking into their lethargic, once energetic child’s eyes. I see parents who have amazing strength and hope. Parents who daily confront the fear of losing their sweet baby, then shove that fear back as far down as it will go. Parents who stay in the moment so that each day they can be whatever their beautiful child needs for them to be that day. Alex’s Lemonade stand is an amazing way to help raise money for childhood cancer. It’s a wonderful way to get your family all together for a great cause too! So what is Alex’s Lemonade stand? It’s a lemonade stand that is (now) run by families and organizations all across the nation during June 3- June 11. The first stand was done by a little girl named Alexandrea “Alex” . “When she was just four-years-old, Alex held her first childhood cancer fundraiser in her front yard and raised over $2,000. By the time of her death in 2004, Alex raised $1 million and inspired a legacy of hope and cures for childhood cancer.”Another easy way to help is by donating or purchasing items from their shop. Items like the Alex’s Table cookbook all help raise money for this vital foundation. Not only are you getting quality goods but your supporting something that could literally be the sweat off a families back they need in order to focus on healing. As, a mother I feel it is so important for those of us who are not in the trenches confronting Childhood Cancer to do our part. We wake everyday kiss our babies and send them to school. At the end of the day they get to come home, fight with their siblings, terrorize our homes with their messes and eat everything they can scavenge. Those incredibly resilient souls who’s babies wake in hospital beds with tubes and monitors everywhere would trade anything to be in our shoes. Some even just for a day! This….THIS is WHY we MUST pick up the slack and share the mantle to help. When I look at children with cancer I know that I must be grateful because it could just as easily be my babies (it still could one day). Those parents who are there with their children each day need us to help. They need someone to care enough to help raise money for their child so they can focus on being present with their child for as long as they are needed. They don’t need to be worried about paying for bills, if a treatment will be covered by insurance. The only thing they should have to do is help make their children feel better. To hug them, to love them, to play with them and have every opportunity of “normal living” every single child fighting Childhood Cancer deserves.
So where do the funds go?
The funds are used for Cancer research, grants to help families, travel expenses for families, and Improving the quality of life
