Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a must-see when visiting South Dakota. The sculpture of four U.S presidents carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore is one of the most iconic images in American history.
Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, about two hours from Rapid City. It is managed by the National Park Service and was designated as a National Historic Landmark on June 15, 1965.
The mountain has been called “the world's largest sculpture” and “the greatest memorial ever conceived”. It was created by Gutzon Borglum, who originally planned to depict all 59 signers of the Declaration of Independence but later settled on four presidents instead: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The carving took 14 years to complete (1927–1941).

- Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to celebrate America's independence from Britain. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom and democracy, and this is why it has been a major attraction for American visitors for over a century.
The Statue of Liberty stands at 151 feet tall, and it is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The statue was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who was inspired by the Roman goddess Libertas (or “Liberty”). The statue took 12 years to build, and it was officially dedicated on October 28th 1886 by President Grover Cleveland.
Today, more than 3 million people visit the Statue of Liberty every year. - Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that connects San Francisco, California and Marin County. The bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States. It has been featured in films such as Vertigo, Superman, and Godzilla. It also helped inspire the structure of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and many other bridges around the world.
The Golden Gate Bridge is 2,200 feet long and has a main span of 4,200 feet (1,280 m). The bridge towers above San Francisco Bay at an elevation of 220 feet (67 m) at mid-span. The main span was completed on May 27th, 1937 after only four years of construction. The bridge's construction was part of an effort to connect San Francisco to Marin County by crossing the Golden Gate Strait via ferry boats and a tunnel under Mt Tamalpais. However, both projects were canceled due to high costs so instead engineers constructed this iconic structure using steel girders and rivets for strength and beauty.
The bridge opened on May 28th, 1937 as a toll bridge but cost $35 million dollars to build! Today there are no tolls on this beautiful landmark which makes it free to visit if you're willing to walk across!
- Alcatraz Island (California)
Alcatraz Island, also called “The Rock”, is a small island located in the San Francisco Bay. It is located on the west coast of the United States, across from San Francisco. Alcatraz Island was originally named “Isla de los Alcatraces” which means “Island of the Pelicans” by Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775.
Alcatraz was used mainly for military purposes and as a prison for many years. The first military use of the island was during the American Civil War when it served as a base for Union troops to monitor Confederate ship movement on the West Coast. In 1907, Alcatraz was bought by the US Government and used as a military prison from 1933 until 1963. During this time, it housed some of America's most notorious criminals including Al Capone and Robert Stroud who was known as “the Birdman of Alcatraz”. In 1963, Alcatraz became part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is now open to tourists all year round.

- Mount Washington Auto Road ( New Hampsire )
Mount Washington Auto Road is a toll road in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The road is about 10 miles long and it leads to the summit of Mount Washington. The mountain is the highest peak in the northeastern United States, with an altitude of 6,288 feet above sea level. It attracts thousands of tourists every year who come to see this spectacular mountain.
Mount Washington Auto Road was built in 1861 and it was originally used as a carriage path that led to the summit. Later, cars were allowed on this road and today it's still open for them, although it's only open seasonally from May 1st until October 31st. During winter months, Mount Washington Auto Road is closed because there are no snowplows available to clear it off when there's snowfall on the ground.
There are two ways to reach Mount Washington Auto Road: taking Route 16 from Gorham or Route 302 from North Woodstock. If you're coming from North Woodstock, make sure to stop at the visitor center first so that you can get your tickets for admission into the park. This way, you won't have any problems when you arrive at the main entrance of Mount Washington State Park which is located about 15 minutes away from North Woodstock town center.
- The Gateway Arch
The Gateway Arch is a monument in St. Louis, Missouri that commemorates the westward expansion of the United States. It was built to honor Thomas Jefferson and his role in the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase. Construction of the arch began in 1963 and was completed in 1965.
The structure stands 630 feet tall and 630 feet wide at its base. It has a total span of 630 feet between its legs, making it the tallest man-made monument in North America. The arch's top reaches more than 110 feet above ground level.
