6. Having poor mental health can lead to poor physical health
It’s no secret that people who are feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed are more likely to get sick. But did you know that poor mental health can also lead to poor physical health?
The reason is when your mind and body aren’t working in harmony, you can’t be at your best. And when you aren’t at your best, it can have a negative impact on every aspect of your life—including your physical health.
One reason is because when you feel stressed or anxious, your body releases cortisol and adrenaline hormones that help prepare you for fight or flight. While these hormones are necessary in times of crisis, if they remain elevated for too long they can wreak havoc on the body and brain.
Stress can also cause digestive issues like heartburn, constipation, diarrhea and acid reflux. It can also make you more susceptible to infections because stress lowers immune system function. Aside from that, it can also cause headaches, fatigue and insomnia—all things which affect both mental and physical health!
On the flip side, having good mental health also helps promote good physical health. If you feel happy and optimistic about yourself and others around you (which usually comes with having good mental health), then it affects your body in a positive way. You also most likely take care of yourself physically by exercising, eating healthy foods, etc.
Above all else, mental health is about the well-being of our loved ones and ourselves. Thus, we should not hesitate in making it a priority. In fact, maybe we should start today.
