Have you been watching your favorite travel bloggers’ Instagram feeds? Are you daydreaming about all the amazing places you could visit? Maybe you’re already preparing your 2020 bucket list.
If you haven’t chosen your destinations yet, we humbly submit this list for consideration. It’s time to get off the beaten path and check out these unique travel destinations.
- Tunisia Gives Great Value
North Africa, in general, is an underrated travel destination. Tunisia gives you a great entry point at a reasonable cost.
You might know Tunisia if you’re a fan of the Star Wars films. The country provided the filming location for Luke Skywalker’s family homestead on Tatooine.
If you prefer more earthly lore, then you can visit the remains of the ancient city of Carthage. The country also offers up plenty of beaches. Check out Sidi Bou Said if you want to combine your beach-going with some more cultural flair.
There’s more sand inland too, as you can access the rolling dunes of the mighty Sahara Desert.
The traditional accommodations are Dar guesthouses, which add character and color to your trip.
- Exploring Beyond Rome
Everyone knows the old saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” You know what the Romans did? They left and conquered huge swaths of the known world.
Follow their lead. Once you’ve had had a chance to tour the Colosseum, venture to other parts of Italy. You have no shortage of unique travel destinations to choose from here.
Our top choice is Matera, on the southern coast. It’s best-known for its Sassi structures, which are carved right into the hillside. These amazing constructions have even earned a UNESCO designation.
In 2019, Matera was a European Capital of Culture. New hotels and restaurants have been opened. Try piatti and rose, then check out churches and piazzi.
You can even go foraging with a local farmer in Murgia National Park.
- Check out Chile
Santiago isn’t the only destination in Chile, so look beyond the capital and see what else the country has to offer. Chile has no shortage of natural wonders. If you like adventure, this might be the right choice for you.
In the south of the country, you’ll find Pucon, a small town near Torres Del Paine National Park. In the background, you’ll see the stark white of Villarrica, one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
Trekking through the Torres Del Paine National Park can be challenging, but it’s rewarding. There are many Andean peaks, as well as gorgeous waterfalls and tons of wildlife.
For a different experience, head north to the Elqui Valley and the Atacama Desert. One of the driest places on Earth, the Atacama has been used by NASA to recreate conditions on Mars.
It’s also one of the very best places on Earth to get a view of the heavens. Elqui Valley has no artificial light and is the world’s very first International Dark Sky Sanctuary. Bring your telescope and camp out under the stars for an amazing light show.
- Explore India
It’s tough to pick just one place in India. The subcontinent is full of unique travel destinations, and all of them have their merits.
Kochi, located along the Malabar Coast, is a top spot for eco-tourists. The city invested in renewable energy, including the world’s first solar-powered airport.
It also offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to bunk in cozy homes. Stop to eat at one of the many boho cafes, before making your way to one of the many galleries. Along the way, you’ll see plenty of street art and get to sample some colonial-era architecture as well.
At the other end of the continent, you’ll find Uttarakhand, the so-called Land of Gods. Dotted with ancient temples nestled in the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, you’ll find a unique blend of the sacred and the natural.
Agar, home of the Taj Mahal, remains a top choice. Madhya Pradesh gets top marks for wildlife spotting.
- Malaysia Has Something for Everyone
Malaysia is an up-and-comer when it comes to travel destinations. The country has long been under the radar. Travelers are now discovering its vast array of experiences.
Langkwai, which is comprised of 99 islands, is a beach-lover’s paradise. Much of the development on the main island still reflects the traditional culture. Explore the rain forest and sample curry and roti from street vendors.
Penang is the best choice to sample the cultural smorgasbord that makes up Malaysia. Chinese, Indian, Malay, and British influences mingle together to create an experience you can’t find anywhere else.
George Town, on one of the islands, is the perfect microcosm. Each quarter of the city boasts a different heritage, linked together by street art.
- Serbia is Europe for Less
Europe is full of amazing destinations. But they can be both expensive and overcrowded. If you’re looking for something a little different, try one of the Balkan countries.
Serbia is an excellent choice. Laid-back café culture characterizes the capital. When the sun goes down, you’ll find plenty of budget-friendly party options.
Of course, there’s more to the country than that. Outside of Belgrade, you’ll find plenty of outdoor adventures and even wineries. Visit a monastery or take in the natural wonders, and don’t break the bank while you’re at it.

You can pretty much throw a pin at a map of Vietnam and pick an amazing travel destination. Whether you choose Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, you should be ready for adventure.
Don’t forget about Hue, the ancient capital city located between the two. Halong Bay is another popular choice for tourists. The list of amazing places to discover goes on.
