When you're stressed, you need to relax. To do that successfully, you need to keep control of yourself and the situation. Here are nine useful ways to help you relax when you're stressed out, but still have control.

1. Take a walk outside

Many people find that taking a walk outside is a great way to relax, and it can also be an excellent way to stay in control. Walking helps you to focus your attention on the present moment, instead of thinking about all the things you have to do later. It also helps you to clear your mind of stress and worries.

In fact, walking outside is often more enjoyable than walking on a treadmill or using an elliptical machine because it gives you the opportunity to enjoy nature as you move your body. If you suffer from anxiety or depression, this might be one of the best things that you can do for yourself. 

If you work out at the gym regularly, try taking some time off from exercising and try walking instead so that your body has time to recover. This will help prevent burnout and allow your body to repair itself naturally without any additional exercise stress added on top of it.

2. Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep isn't just about feeling rested — it's also about taking control over your mental health and well-being. This is because sleep deprivation can lead to depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. It can also make it harder for you to concentrate, solve problems and make decisions.

The best way to do this is by setting a bedtime schedule. Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning — even on weekends. If possible, keep your evenings free so they don't interfere with this schedule. 

If you have trouble falling asleep when it's time for bed, don't watch TV or read in bed or do anything else that stimulates your mind (like playing video games). Instead, try reading something soothing (in dim light) until you feel tired enough to fall asleep naturally.

3. Eat healthy meals

Eating healthily helps you feel more in control of your life. It can help you feel like you have more energy and stamina, so you're able to do more of the things you want to do! And those things might include relaxing, which is another one of the best ways to relieve stress and anxiety.

So when you're feeling stressed out, try eating a healthy meal that's easy to prepare and doesn't take up too much time. Maybe it's just some berries with yogurt or an avocado sandwich on whole wheat bread! Whatever it is you'll be amazed at how much better your mood will be after such an easy change in your routine—and how much better you'll feel overall!

4. Exercise regularly

You may be surprised to learn that there are many ways in which exercising can help reduce stress. In fact, regular exercise can even have a positive impact on your mental health and overall happiness.

In addition to helping you relax, exercising regularly can also help improve your sleep quality and reduce your risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity and heart disease.

So what is it about exercise that makes it so beneficial? Well, one of the main reasons people find that exercise helps them relax is because it gives them an opportunity to get away from their daily responsibilities and focus solely on themselves.

When you’re running or doing yoga, for example, there isn’t much else going on in your life other than you trying to get better at something—which tends to take away some of our stress because we feel like we’re being productive!

Another reason why exercise helps us relax has to do with endorphins—those feel-good hormones that kick in during physical activity but also when we laugh or smile! Endorphins are neurotransmitters in the brain associated with positive mood and pain relief.  With this, the release of endorphins during exercise can reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

5. Spend time with friends/family/your significant other

The stress of your everyday life can really wear you down. That's why it's so important to find ways to unwind and recharge, so that you're able to get back out there again tomorrow. But if you spend all your time relaxing, you might not be able to function when it's time to get back into your daily routine.

And that's where spending time with friends and family comes in. You don't have to worry about anything but having fun, so you can really let loose without worrying about the rest of life getting in the way. And because these people are important parts of your life, you'll also feel more relaxed when it comes time for them to leave than if they were strangers who came over for dinner or something like that.

What’s more is that they can offer support and comfort when things get stressful at work or home. They'll also listen when you need someone to talk through an issue. They'll give their opinion if asked for their advice…or not if you don't want them too! And they'll always have your back no matter what happens.

6. Have a favorite hobby or interest (e.g., read, write, play music)

Whether you're a big spender or a penny pincher, hobbies are an excellent way to relax, unwind and have fun. They give us something to focus on besides work and everyday life.

In fact, hobbies are good for our health. Studies show that people who participate in hobbies live longer than those who don't. And the benefits don't stop there — other studies show that hobbies may help lower stress levels and boost self-esteem.

Hobbies help us also stay connected with friends and loved ones. This is especially true if your family doesn't live nearby or you're away from work colleagues all week long during the work day. Hobbies give us time with others we care about without having to spend money on travel or entertainment costs.

7. Meditate 

Meditation is not only a form of relaxation, but it can also help you to control your emotions and reduce anxiety. Meditation can help you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings and emotions so that you can deal with them in healthy ways.

If you practice meditation regularly, it will help you to improve your focus and concentration skills. This can help you to learn new skills more quickly than if you learned them without using meditation techniques.

This practice also helps reduce stress levels by slowing down the activity in certain brain regions responsible for processing emotions. This allows other parts of the brain that are involved in higher thinking processes, such as problem solving, decision making and memory retrieval, to work better than they would during times of high stress or anxiety.

8. Do something for someone else

Volunteering is a great way to let off steam, but also feel in control and have a sense of purpose. It's easy to feel like you're just spinning your wheels when you're not working, and it's hard to find something to latch onto that gives you the same sense of meaning as your job does.

Volunteering is a great way for people who don't have much time for hobbies or interests outside of their jobs to still find ways to feel productive and fulfilled. It can also help them get back in touch with what they enjoy doing in their free time, which can help them re-energize themselves when they return to work.

And if you're looking for something more practical than just getting out there and helping others, volunteering can give you an opportunity to try out new skills or learn something new about yourself—like how much patience or flexibility you have!

9. Laugh

When you're stressed out, it can be hard to relax. But there's something about laughing that can help you unwind, even when you're in a stressful situation.

When you laugh, your body releases endorphins—chemicals that make us feel good and relaxed. That's why watching something funny is often a great way to relax and keep control at the same time.

This doesn't mean that laughing can solve all of your problems or prevent stress from getting to you. But it does mean that if you find yourself in a stressful situation, it can help to get some relief by watching something funny on TV,  YouTube, or even in books!
