Discover Rothenburg, a Beautiful Medieval German Town Looks Like It Came Straight Out of a Movie

Stepping into Rothenburg ob der Tauber is like stepping into a fairytale. Nestled in the heart of Bavaria, it seems like time stood still in the enchanting medieval town. It has a magical and storybook atmosphere, fueled by its charming half-timbered houses, friendly residents, and breathtakingly green surroundings.

At 110 miles from Frankfurt and 130 miles from Munich, the town is perfectly located and easy to reach for national and international visitors. As it’s located along the Romantic Route and named as one of the most beautiful places in Germany by Conde Nast Traveler, it’s the perfect inclusion for your Europe itinerary this summer.

What’s So Special About Rothenburg?

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which translates to “Red Fortress above the Tauber,” is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns. Founded around 970, Rothenburg shows its rich history in every stone of its restored city walls and cobblestone streets.

Robert Nehr of the Rothenburg ob der Tauber Tourism Board emphasizes, “The old quarter Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the top five sights in Germany according to the yearly polls of the German National Tourist Board.” Nehr adds, “Apart from its huge density of attractions and sights, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a living city: 2500 of its 11,500 inhabitants live within the old quarter and take part in its historical festivals, wine festival, and the famous Christmas market in December as participants, actors or guests.”

The town's iconic half-timbered houses, with their steep gabled roofs and colorful facades, are straight out of a children's book. The Plönlein, one of the most well-known spots in Rothenburg, is a lovely corner where two narrow streets come together at a charming yellow house, which reportedly inspired Geppetto’s home in Walt Disney’s Pinocchio.

On the Rothenburg Tower Trail, visitors can walk atop Old Town’s restored surrounding medieval walls Old Town and enjoy stunning views of the town and Tauber Valley below.

Have a Local Experience in Rothenburg

To truly immerse oneself in the fairytale atmosphere, partake in the local experiences Rothenburg offers. Visit the Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village, an all-ages, year-round holiday wonderland filled with handcrafted ornaments and decorations.

Experience Rothenburg’s unique atmosphere with a walk through its cobblestone alleyways. The town is compact enough to walk around and explore the surroundings. Explore the main square and the picturesque streets around Old Town Rothenburg. The houses in Rothenburg still have authentic lofts and kept the warehouse doors they used to fill with grain back in the day. And the town wall is still intact, complete with arrow slits and towers.

Stay overnight to see the city’s true beauty. In the later afternoon and evening, when most visitors leave, the town gets quiet and even more magical. Walks around town reveal residents visiting cafes and restaurants or gathering and talking to each other on the square. Enjoy this experience up close for a more authentic trip.

Don’t Forget the Cultural Experiences

Cultural experiences further influence the impression and experience of a Rothenburg visit. For a true adventure, peruse the Medieval Crime and Justice Museum to find more than 32,000 square feet devoted to the development of the legal system. The museum’s exhibits cover the Middle Ages to the 20th century, which means instruments of torture and death penalty devices are on display.

The Rothenburg Museum, found in a former Dominican convent, regularly launches new exhibitions that show different aspects of Rothenburg’s history. Its collections of medieval artifacts include intricate wood carvings, centuries-old weaponry, and religious art.

Not far from the Rothenburg Museum, guests will find the noteworthy St. James Church (St. Jakobskirche). The 15th-century Gothic church is home to the legendary Heilig-Blut-Altar (Altar of the Holy Blood), a masterpiece by Tilman Riemenschneider.

Must-Visit Spots in and Around Rothenburg

While every corner of Rothenburg exudes charm, some spots are particularly magical. The Town Walls were one of my favorite things to experience, as you can even walk on top of them. They provide a unique perspective on the town's layout and history.

Experience Rothenburg ob der Tauber from new heights by ascending the Tower of the Town Hall. This iconic structure, dating back to the 13th century, offers adventurous visitors the best panoramic views of the medieval town and its surroundings. Be aware the climb up the 220-step staircase is steep and narrow, as staircases were in the Middle Ages. The trek to the top is more than worth it, as its view reveals red-tiled rooftops, cobblestone streets, and the lush Franconian countryside.

The Night Watchman’s Tour, a guided evening walk led by a costumed guide, offers a fascinating glimpse into the town's past and how people lived in the Middle Ages. One of my favorite stops along the way was the Burggarten, a beautiful garden where the castle once sat. It offers one of the best views of the Tauber Valley and is a perfect spot for a walk, day or night.

Eat Your Way Through Rothenburg

No visit to Rothenburg would be complete without sampling its kitchen. The town is famous for its Schneeballen, or “snowballs,” a pastry made of strips of fried dough and dusted with powdered sugar.

When you need lunch, Rothenburg has no shortage of cafes and businesses. Stop by Cafe Einzigartig, a sanctuary right in the middle of town with a fun interior and extensive breakfast opportunities.

After a full day of exploring, Franconian cuisine does not disappoint. Pick one of the town's many taverns, where you can try dishes like sausages, sauerkraut, and regional wines. Weinstube zum Pulverer has incredible sausages and a very local atmosphere.

Rothenberg Ob Der Tauber as Summer Destination

Whether you're wandering its medieval streets or simply soaking in the magical atmosphere, Rothenburg ob der Tauber feels like walking around in a real-life fairytale.
