Winter is coming but down here in Texas we don’t let a thing like that bother us. Mild temperatures and lack of extreme winter weather mean that we can continue to enjoy our free time. It also means the roads are always open, which means only one thing — road trip! Here are some great ideas for getting out of San Antonio just for a day, or perhaps a little more.
- 1. Enchanted Rock (medium drive)
Head north about 90 miles, just north of Fredericksburg in the Texas hill country, and you’ll get to Enchanted Rock. It’s one of the largest natural rock formations in the United States. Its dome rises 425 feet above the ground, and it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1970. Why not drive up there and give it a hike? Nice way to spend the day.
- 2. Lockhart, TX (medium drive)
Just 70 miles to the northeast of the city you can find Lockhart, which is home to Black’s Barbecue and probably the best bbq food in the entire country. They tried to keep it a secret, but truth will out. The perfect day out, and just an hour’s drive away.
- Austin, TX (medium drive)
Journey 80 miles northeast of San Antonio and you’ll make it to Texas’s unique state capital, Austin. This oasis of art, live music and fine living is an excellent change of scenery from the Alamo! This town has something for everyone — good food, nice people, even a lake. Can you think of a good reason not to take a trip there?
- Shiner, TX (medium drive)
Texas’s signature beer has to come from somewhere, right? Well, Shiner beer brewery is open to the public for tours, and what’s even better is that it’s just a 90-minute drive along I-10 eastward from San Antonio. If you’re a Texan, you’ve probably got some Shiner at home right now, or you have a friend or close relative who does. Why not take a trip to see where it comes from? It’s closer than you think!
- 5. Big Bend National Park (long drive)
For anyone with more time and the desire to drive further, Big Bend National Park could be the trip for you. At six hours, it’s neither a casual drive, nor a trip for the faint hearted. The park is a real jewel in the Texas crown. Highlights include the Mariscal Mine, Glenn Springs, unbeatable vistas on the Rio Grande and much more.
Don’t stay cooped up in the house in the Texas “winter.” Load up the car and go do something! Imagine those poor New Englanders buried in snow and think how much they want to get out. We’re lucky to be in Texas, so let’s enjoy what we have!
Head on over to North Star Dodge and get your car you been wanting too.
