How Can I Change My Career?

Whether you have just left your first job ever, and feel like it wasn’t the right fit for you, or have been working in the same trade for many decades, there may come a time where you consider changing your career. This could involve something similar within your current field, or also a completely new path. If you are considering changing your career, you may first want to give thought to how you would do so. For some roles, this may be as simple as applying for positions while, for others, it could see you needing to go back to college.

Education

Certain roles that you might like to apply for may require you to gain qualifications, if you do not have them already, or even higher ones than you already have. For example, if you hold a master’s degree, some positions may ask for a doctor of education degree as their minimum requirement, meaning you would need to gain that extra certificate before you would be eligible for the role. It may mean that you either spend the near future training yourself up more, or need to adjust your career choices to match any qualifications you already hold.

Experience

Even though the training and certifications that you hold can be important when applying for new jobs, your previous work history may also contribute towards whether you are invited for an interview or not. There may even be times where you might not necessarily hold all the qualifications that a company desires in their candidates, but your proven work history shows that you would be competent within a role. This is why it is important not to leave anything out during the application process. If you lack experience within that sector, it may be a good idea to undertake voluntary or internship work for a few months, so that you can learn a bit more about the trade, and have something relevant to include when you do start looking for paid work.

Feasibility

While some people may be able to look for a new role while still attending their current job, returning to education may mean that you need to reduce your hours, or resign from employment completely. Before doing so, you may wish to create an expenses forecast to see how this will affect you. Although it can be disappointing, it would not be prudent to leave your job if it means that you can no longer pay the bills, so you might want to consider building up some savings prior to this, or altering your career goal to one that will not see you in financial disarray.

Due to the number of different job roles there are in society, it can be a fairly simple process to change your career path if you have the means and the drive. By considering your financial needs, education, and experience, you can create a roadmap that will help you find success when you begin the application process.
