When it comes to giving a surprise to a wife, we often think of a nice piece of jewelry or a nice day out at the spa. A car is a major investment, and I don't recommend doing it without consulting your wife. You might have been inspired by the bow around the car kind of a thing, but believe me, it’s not as simple as it looks.

How To Surprise Your Wife With A New Car

If you want to surprise your wife with a car, here’s how we recommend you approach the surprise:

Think It Over

A car is not a small investment or a gift. Why do you want to give your wife a car? Does she really need a car? You can’t really return a car, so it’s better to be sure before you invest in the car.

The next thing you should be considering is whether you can afford another car. Think of how are going to finance the car. Who will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance?

Figure out your budget. Will you be buying the car in cash, or paying the initial down payment and putting up the rest as a loan. Who will be responsible for the loan? If you are planning to pay the down payment and have your wife pay for the loan amounts, then we advise involving your wife in the entire process to avoid tensions later on.

Take Your Wife Car Window Shopping

This way you will know what your wife really wants. You could make an excuse that you are researching it for your boss who wants you to select a suitable car for his wife. This will also be helpful in finding out if your wife thinks a car is a good gift.

You could also say you are thinking of buying her a car in the future. She doesn’t have to know how soon that might be happening.

Take the preferred choice on the test drive for your wife to get a feel of the car.

Financing the Car

If you are planning to buy a car for your wife, you should ideally buy it in cash. You don’t want to give your wife a gift with a car loan to follow.

This doesn’t mean you can’t take out give your wife a car as a gift on a car loan. If you want to surprise your wife, you can take out the car loan in your name. The title of the car and the loan doesn’t have to be under the same name. You can also have the title registered under both your names to make it easier to take out a car loan.

When taking out a car loan, always look at the best car loans like the ones here.

Transferring Title

Ideally, your wife has to be present when the car dealer hands over the car in order to sign the title papers. But if you have a good credit report, or previous dealing with the dealer, you can request to have the car sent over earlier.

After you surprise your wife with the car, you can have her drive the car to the dealer to sign the title papers.

Car Insurance

Getting Car Insurance shouldn’t be a problem. You probably already have an insurance policy together, so you can add a new vehicle to the current policy. You might have to take to your insurance agent and get him in with the surprise.

If you aren’t married and are living together, adding another car to the policy might be a little challenging. Some insurance policies have a clause that allows you a grace period of 14-30 days of reporting your new car to be included in your policy. Find out if you have the same clause. This means you can add the car to the policy later on.

How to Present the Gift

This is the most exciting part! Some ideas on how to present the gift are:

  • Put a Big Red Bow around the car. Present the keys in a beautiful box. This will also make for a great picture with the car to upload on social media, and to keep as a memory for later on.
  • Take her to the showroom. Take her to the showroom again and get the car dealer to present the keys as a surprise.
  • Hire an Uber. Pretend to call an uber the next time your wife wants to go out. Secretly go out and park the car in the driveway. Pretend to be the driver and hand over the keys when your wife comes out.
  • Christmas Gift. If you are gifting it around the holiday season, then you can gift it as a Christmas Present. Dress as Santa or ask a friend to help you out.

Best of luck gifting your wife a new car. We hope she likes the present and appreciates all the efforts you put in.
