Making A Budget For Your Wedding: Practical Tips

If you’ve recently got engaged and are about to start your wedding planning then there are a few very important things that you need to do first! Planning your wedding is one of the most exciting things that you will get to do in your life and there is a lot to think about which also means that there are lots of things that you will need to buy and plan for. The first thing you need to consider is making a budget for your big day and it’s really important that you try to stick to this as much as possible. It can be easy to get carried away when you are wedding planning and overspend on things that you wouldn’t usually have, this is why it is so important to have your budget set at the start.

If you have a large budget then you may want to look at hiring a wedding planner. They can be expensive, however they will be able to do a lot of the work for you, and also source suppliers that meet your requirements and also are within your budget. When you are considering your budget it’s a good idea to set aside some money and think about your big costs that you will need to spend out on. The things that you will definitely need and will include things such as venue, wedding rings, wedding dress, suits, honeymoon, stationary, suppliers and food.

Create a spreadsheet

When you are at the start of your wedding planning, sit down and have a chat to your partner about how much money you have to spend. Although some people can spend thousands on their big day, you can spend a smaller amount and still have the most amazing wedding day, just remember to plan something that you can afford and won’t leave you in debt.

Creating a spreadsheet is a great way to manage your spending and ensure that you don’t overspend on any areas. It would be a good idea to have a document that both you and your partner can manage and update and the main thing is to make sure that everything you buy for the wedding is written down and included on here, however small.

Organisation

The most important thing to think about and remember is to be organised and plan early for your wedding day, this will ensure that nothing is left to the last minute and you ensure that everything is covered. Many wedding venues and suppliers get booked up early, sometimes a year or so in advance so it’s a good idea to get these things booked early so that you can organise your date and have something to work towards.  If you do have certain suppliers in mind then it is a good idea to plan early. If you don’t have a particular wedding day or date in mind, then to save some money you might want to consider a mid-week wedding. This is a good way to save some money on both the venue and in some cases, suppliers.

Think about what items you could borrow or hire

Sustainability is something that is really popular for many people and having a sustainable and ethical wedding is something that you might want to look into and could also be a good way to save some money. Instead of buying everything new you could look at items that you might be able to borrow from people or even hire. This is also a tradition to use something borrowed, so it will tie into this nicely as well! It might also be a nice added touch to borrow something from a family member or close friend.

Choosing a wedding venue

Your wedding venue is something that will probably take most of your budget and is one of the most important decisions you will make, so it is important to make sure that you choose somewhere that you love.  When you are thinking about your wedding venue you will need to take into account how many people you will be inviting to your day as this will help what size of venue to choose. If you want to have a small and intimate wedding then you could look at smaller venues.  If you have your heart set on a large venue and your budget allows it, then there are plenty of exclusive use venues, castles or private estates that you could hire for your special day. Making sure that everything you want and need is supplied from the table and chair covers, to everything else to make your day so special.

Make sure that you stick to your budget

Tracking your budget regularly is very important and will ensure that you don’t overspend. It will also allow you to monitor it and see if there are any areas that you could spend more on as it gets closer to the wedding day. If you find yourselves starting to overspend then you may want to consider alternatives, such as asking a friend to make your wedding cake, or buying one yourself from a shop. This is the same with your catering too, instead of spending a lot on your evening food then you may want to look at buying some yourself or asking a friend to provide some food for you.
