main-pretzelsRecently I was given the chance to try a box full of newman's own organic products. My husband and I do the grocery shopping together, and we both were surprised that we didn't know much about these products. There were cookies, pretzels, licorice, mints. They are so good. They are organic and let's face it as good for you as a cookie can be. My first thought when I opened the package was why didn’t I know about Newman’s Own Organics sooner? I’d really been missing out! They have a huge variety of organic snack products that would satisfy my sweet tooth or my occasional salty snack craving. Their products include cookies, chocolates, licorice, pretzels, dried fruit, popcorn, mints (organic mints!!!!), and more. Obviously these aren’t what you would call “healthy”, but they make an amazing occasional treat that is free of all the worrisome chemicals and hormones that may be in the average snack foods. The fact that the ingredients are organic and high quality means that they also taste better than similar non-organic snack products.
My son loved all the cookies and pretzels, as I did. We now are going to be on the look out for newman's products when we go grocery shopping.

Clever looking little pretzels, aren't they? Yes, and they taste great, too.

“Pretzels were always Dad's favorite snack. That's why we started the company with them,” says Nell. “It's amazing that pretzels have been around for over thirteen hundred years; maybe it's because they are so versatile. Many recipes can be found in cookbooks or on-line that use them. They can be crushed for a pie base, eaten with dips of all kinds, added to nuts, dried fruit and cereal for homemade trail mix, coated in melted chocolate (fun to do with kids), or just a quick, healthy snack.”

We have a perfect pretzel for every occasion. In fact we have ten varieties to choose from. And since they're baked (not fried), our pretzels make a great low-fat, healthy snack with only 1 to 1.5 gram fat (no trans-fat).
Spelt • Salted Sticks • High Protein • Unsalted Rounds • Rods Thin Sticks •Salted Rounds • Honey Wheat Mini Salted Thins • Mighty Mini

The Rounds come in Salted and Unsalted, and the Minis include Spelt, High Protein, Honey Wheat and the Mighty. Spelt has a light, slightly sweet, nutty flavor. With a stronger outer hull than either oats or wheat it seems to keep more of the nutty grain taste and good nutrients locked inside. By using yellow pea flour in our High Protein, we were able to create a pretzel with 5 grams of protein per serving.

Sticks are available in Salted, Thin and for those who have requested a thicker stick, Rods. Our old style pretzel rods forced us to revise an old adage: “Don't spare the rods. Spoil the child!”

The mints
Organic mints in four flavors have been added to Newman's Own Organics' product line. The Cinnamon, Ginger, Peppermint and Wintergreen varieties are packed in eye-catching 1.76 ounce tins with colorful cover designs designating their flavor. They carry the USDA organic seal on the back ingredient panel.

“This is the first time we haven't used our familiar American Gothic style logo on the packaging,” says Nell Newman, who appears in the logo with “Pa” Newman. “We were delighted with the illustrations for the tins and thought they'd be fun to use for other purposes after the mints are eaten. The inner paper does carry the familiar logo.”
