As any car owner knows, purchasing car insurance is a crucial aspect. With the advent of the internet, it has become extremely easy to get insurance coverage. This focus on technology has birthed a new type of independent insurance firm: the online-only agency. But how many are willing to approach companies without a physical presence? Is everyone willing to work with an agency that takes care of all its business digitally? Let us find out more.

Brick-and-mortar

The reason why numerous carriers prefer to work with brick-and-mortar agencies is due to their vast local networks of business and personal connections, and also due to recognition within their communities. If customers have a problem, they can contact and meet with agents to resolve it. Agents at a brick-and-mortar agency may also be able to give prospects and existing clients more direct attention.

However, a digital presence is a must-have these days, but these agencies depend on face-to-face connections, so they might not invest in digital services as much as they should. Agents could have additional obligations that could interfere with their ability to perform routine customer service tasks.

Online-Only

A lot of agencies are choosing this route, as it minimizes costs to a certain extent. Since they have an online-only presence, they don’t sell exclusively in one market, and agents are typically available in the office when you call, not out meeting with other customers or promoting their business to groups in the community.

A greater success rate is often achieved by online insurance agents, as subject matter experts in specific genres that can be promoted across several states. This type of agency devotes more staff to customer-facing positions since it does not carry the burden of generating new business away from the office. Even if they don’t have a “location”, they offer an array of digital services, thus making up the deficit. But then again, a lot of people might not like the idea of buying insurance from someone they haven’t met.

There is no right or wrong answer here because the type of agency best suited for you is a personal decision.  The brick-and-mortar model might have worked out well for your friend, but based on where you are residing, an online agency could be the best fit for you. Regardless of your choice, please ensure the coverage meets your requirements and compute the amount of premium you can afford to pay every month.
