If you are looking for an attention grabbing book The Conciliators will suffice. I had never read anything by James. J. Kaufman before so I was not sure what to expect. But his writing style sucked me in within a few pages. By the end of chapter 1 I was invested in Preston and driven to keep reading to see what was going to unfold. I wanted to know about his older daughter…Why had they been estranged for so many years? Who's her mother and what is/was she to Preston? What was the story there? By the end of the second chapter I was completely hooked.
The Conciliators is a thrilling book full of twists. I found myself not wanting to put the book down once I started. And it was a fairly easy read. The characters are well developed and have plenty of depth. Preston (the main character) is fascinating. By the 5th chapter you learn he hasn't had the easiest of times and has worked hard to get where he is at. He's loyal to those that have helped him in the past (perfect example is the CFO). But Preston is not good at looking into details. He's more a big picture guy with a huge heart.
But his world is crashing down around him. His best friend Austin has taken advantage of him and the company and it's all coming out. Austin has made an avalanche of trouble for Preston that could end him up in prison and tank the company. Preston is determined to find a way through the storm and come out the other side the best he can.
Riveting! I could not put this book down! I kept rooting for Preston but there were twist coming at the guy left and right. I found myself emotionally invested in the characters. I would hold my breath when police or FBI arrived. I found myself gasping when a shocking development unfolded. If you are looking for a good book to curl up to this winter, one that will take you there as if you are living it, this is the book. The Conciliators is an attention grabbing, emotional roller coaster.
