The Importance of Cleaning Your Lash Extensions

The Importance of Cleaning Your Lash Extensions

To maintain the soft, voluminous appearance of your extensions, protect the health of your eyes, and prevent premature shedding, regularly cleaning your eyelashes is paramount.

You might worry about your eyelashes falling out during the cleaning process, but if you wash and brush them gently, they’ll survive the ordeal looking better than ever.

To learn why you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of cleaning your lash extensions, keep on reading.

The Problems with Poor Lash Hygiene

Tiny, microscopic parasites, called Demodex Folliculorum, live in our eyelashes. This might sound uncomfortable, or even terrifying — but in most cases, they’re beneficial to have.

Demodex Folliculorum are useful for cleaning up dead skin and debris. They’re entirely harmless—unless they’re allowed to reproduce unchecked.

If there are too many parasites or mites in your eyelashes, you can experience premature shedding. This is when your eyelashes abruptly fall out.

These mites aren’t the only thing that lives in your eyelashes, though.

The main purpose of your eyelashes is to collect dirt and debris. This keeps contaminants from entering your eyes, compromising your vision and overall eye health.

When they’re not properly cleaned, dirt, oil, and debris—including allergy-causing pollen—can linger in your extensions. This isn’t just bad for your health. It can make your eyelashes look flat, dirty, or droopy.

If you don’t regularly maintain your eyelashes very carefully, they can start causing problems.

You might experience:

  • Increased allergies and irritation
  • Blepharitis
  • Flaky lash lines
  • Redness and irritation
  • Premature shedding
  • Buildup of dead skin
  • Lack of new eyelash growth

How To Clean Your Lash Extensions

To avoid complications associated with unwashed eyelashes, there’s one clear solution: regularly washing and brushing your extensions.

The process is simple, quick, and painless. You won’t need much to get started: just a source of water, a specialized eyelash cleaner, a towel, and a used, but clean mascara brush.

A daily washing and brushing can remove light debris and dust from your eyelashes.

In the morning, splash your eyelashes with lukewarm water, and, using a clean mascara brush, give the extensions a fifteen to twenty second sweep.

This should be enough to prevent any major complications and keep your eyelashes looking great.

Additional care is optional, but highly recommended.

Two to three times a week, you’ll want to thoroughly cleanse your extensions with a specialized cleaning product. These can be purchased from or provided by your local Lash Artist.

Lather the cleanser on your hands, and gently work the soapy substance into your eyelashes. When you’re done, rinse them with clear, lukewarm water.

With your fingers, wipe your lashes in a slow, upward motion, and blink your eyes to remove any excess water.

Pat your face with a soft towel and leave your extensions to dry naturally.

Once they’re dry, use a clean mascara brush to restore the neatness and fluffiness to your extensions.

For added protection, you can apply sealer, protector, or revitalizer to your lashes. This prolongs your extensions’ lifespan by shielding them from humidity and foreign debris.

Never forget the importance of cleaning your lash extensions. By following this simple routine, you can guarantee your extensions will last longer and look their best.
