Thrilling Vacation Ideas for Adventurous Couples

Quality time is an important component of any relationship, and there’s no better way to get some intentional time than a trip. Away from the distraction of the day-to-day—work, chores, children—it creates a perfect space to focus on each other and bond over mutual interests.

Of course, for many people, the idea of a “couple’s retreat” is a few nights at a bed-and-breakfast or a cruise ship. While that’s fine for some, it’s a snooze-fest for others. If you and your S.O. would rather bond over an adrenaline rush than candlelight any day, check out these thrilling vacation ideas for adventurous couples.

Volcanic Campout

A campout is usually a go-to for those who want to skip the “cushy” trip to the five-star resort. But if you’re a true adventure-seeker, why stop at a trip to the local National Park when you could up the stakes a little? And what better way to up the stakes than with a little lava?

There are around 1,500 active volcanoes in the world, many offering gorgeous hiking and nearby campgrounds. If you want to put a little of the “heat” back into your relationship, visit one of these famous volcano hot spots:

  • Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
  • Eyjafjallajökull Icecap, Iceland
  • Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Arizona
  • Katmai National Park, Alaska
  • Mount Etna, Italy
  • Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Washington
  • Newberry Crater National Monument, Oregon

Off-Roading Retreat

As thrilling as the idea of climbing up a volcano is in theory, it still is, effectively, a hiking trip. If you want a trip that takes you away from the beaten path, off-roading may be a perfect adventurous vacation for you and your S.O. And if there’s one place that’s perfect for off-roading, it’s Moab, Utah.

This little desert town doesn’t look like much from the outside, but people have dubbed it “Disneyland for off-Roaders,” and with its heart-pounding trails and unreal desert views, we agree with them. But keep in mind that Moab’s trails are not for the faint of heart, so make sure you brush up on your off-roading basics and pack your recovery gear before going.

Visit the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World”

But even rock crawling can be a relatively slow-moving adventure. If you are a couple that likes to live life in the fast lane, roller coasters are for you. And the place to go to get them is Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

Cedar Point calls itself the “roller coaster capital of the world,” and with good reason. It boasts 17 roller coasters, including some of the fastest in the country, such as the Millennium Force, which flies at 93 mph, or the Top Thrill Dragster, which clocks in at an impressive 120 mph.

Bonding is everything in a relationship, and if you know that you both love thrills, why not embrace it? After all, they say love is the greatest adventure of all, so your vacation might as well reflect it.
