1 – Florida Overseas Highway (Florida)
Who says you need fields, trees and mountains all around when taking a road trip? Florida’s famous Overseas Highway takes you from Key Largo to Key West, offering some of the most breathtaking and even life-changing ocean views you can imagine. Historic Seven Mile Bridge was a record breaker in its day, and adds human heritage to this area of outstanding natural beauty.
2 – Highway 78 (Alabama)
This route will take you not only through Alabama’s section of the Appalachians, but also to Talladega National Forest, which is also home to Cheaha Mountain, Alabama’s highest point. Find a spot to explore the local wilderness and smell the local Gentians (that’s a kind of local flower, in case you were wondering!)
3 – State Route 197 (Georgia)
Taking State Route 197 will carry you into Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, home to some pretty feisty turns that should excite those looking for a bit of excitement on the drive. It’s not a good idea to take your eyes off the road, driver, so pull up every once in a while, to take in the gorgeous scenery!
4 – Botany Bay Road (South Carolina)
You may be wondering why this is even here, since less than a mile hardly counts as a “road trip,” but Botany Bay Road is too unique to miss. The location on Edisto Island is an entrance to an old plantation, but also half a mile of road on probably the most stunning location in all of South Carolina.
5 – Blue Ridge Parkway (North Carolina-Virginia)
Cutting a swathe through Appalachia, this 470-mile road promises beauty at every turn. Blue Ridge runs from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. It’s arguably among the south’s most iconic drives, with highlights including Rocky Knob, Mabry Hill, and hiking in Mount Pisgah.
