Ways to Stay Positive While Social Distancing

The viral spread of COVID-19 has turned the world upside down in recent months. In such strange and uncertain times, it can easily begin to feel that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. However, in such times, it’s important to look for the light wherever possible. Joy and kindness can pervade our lives in even the darkest times—they may simply take a little more time to discover. On days when the world looks particularly bleak, it’s important to count your blessings and surround yourself with as much love as possible. Allow the following ways to stay positive while social distancing to serve as your guidebook toward the light during these uncertain times.

Spend time with family

Having a stable support system is of the utmost importance during this time. On days when the world looks particularly bleak, your loved ones will be able to offer comfort and support in a way that few others can. Their unconditional love will allow you to share your thoughts and fears without worry, and you can seek solace in one other's arms. Of course, due to social distancing mandates, it can be tricky to comfort each other in person. If you are currently unable to see your loved ones in person, turn to technology instead. Plan a weekly video chat with your loved ones, or send regular texts throughout the day. Though it won’t be quite the same as a big hug, simply seeing their faces and hearing their voices via video screen can help you find the light on a particularly dark day.

Embrace nature

If you’re having trouble finding the light within, consider finding it outside instead. Nature and sunshine have an uncanny way of turning even the darkest days on their heads. Spending some time outside each day can help you rediscover all the little bits of beauty that the world has to offer. Tend to your garden, bask in the springtime sun, or take a walk around your neighborhood. When venturing into the great outdoors, be sure to maintain at least six feet of distance between yourself and others, and wear a face mask if possible. If you’d prefer to maintain a wider berth between yourself and others, you can also spend time outside in your own backyard. Play with your pets, host a family picnic, or pitch a tent and spend the night under the stars.

Find time for yourself

Sometimes the very best thing you can do to stay positive while social distancing is to simply take a step back and spend some quiet time alone. Self-care is more important now than ever before. Finding positivity in the face of a global pandemic is no easy task, and it’s okay if every day isn’t rose-tinted and sunny. On particularly hard days don’t be afraid to put your needs first. Spend the day doing things that you enjoy and that bring you peace, whether that be a relaxing bath, an invigorating exercise routine, or a calming yoga practice. Consider documenting your thoughts and feelings in a journal as well. This will provide you a safe space to explore your feelings and can help you manage the many emotions you may be feeling during this time.
