Bar none, squonk mods are the hottest advanced devices in the vaping industry right now – and if squonk mods are unfamiliar to you now, they won’t be for long. Once handmade devices used only by the most experienced vaping experts, squonk mods have fully entered the mainstream now that virtually every major company in the industry has released regulated squonk mods with full safety features. If you’ve been holding off on buying a squonk mod because they look like they’re overly complicated and aren’t user friendly, you can hold off no longer because there’s never been a better time to buy a squonk mod than right now. We’re about to explain why.

Getting Started: What Is a Squonk Mod?

Members of the vaping community originally used the term “bottom feeders” to describe squonk mods. A bottom feeder is so called because the attachment that generates vapor – usually a rebuildable dripping atomizer – receives e-liquid from the bottom via a bottle mounted next to the battery inside the body of the device.

When you squeeze the bottle in a squonk mod, you push e-liquid into the atomizer through a hollow tube running through the body of the device. A squonk mod requires an atomizer with a hollow center pin to allow e-liquid to travel through. To keep things easy, most squonk mods include compatible atomizers.

In case you were wondering, the term “squonk” is an invention of the vaping community. The term describes the unique noise that e-liquid makes when it travels through the narrow tube.

What Makes Squonk Mods So Great?

Among those who crave huge vapor clouds, the two most popular e-cigarette attachments are rebuildable dripping atomizers and sub-ohm tanks. If you use an RDA, you’ll enjoy the biggest vapor clouds possible – but after every few puffs, you’ll have to drip e-liquid into the atomizer from a bottle to keep the atomizer’s wick wet. Using an RDA, therefore, requires you to carry a bottle of e-liquid everywhere. It’s inconvenient, and it can often be messy. You have to constantly think about whether your atomizer’s wick is wet; you can’t just fill your atomizer with e-liquid and vape all day. If you don’t want to carry a bottle of e-liquid, you can use a sub-ohm tank instead. A tank provides plenty of e-liquid storage, but it has a major drawback in that it doesn’t produce as much vapor as an RDA.

People love squonk mods because they combine the vapor production of RDAs with the greater liquid capacity of tanks. If you use a squonk mod, you can build the atomizer coils of your dreams and chase clouds all day without carrying a bottle of e-liquid everywhere or worrying about whether you’ve forgotten to keep your wick wet.

What Are the Other Benefits of Squonk Mods?

Squonk mods aren’t just great because they offer the best possible combination of great vapor production and ample e-liquid storage. Squonking is also much cleaner than dripping because squonk mods rarely leak. It’s common to use too much e-liquid when dripping with an RDA because the alternative – a dry hit – is something every vaper wants to avoid. If you use too much e-liquid, though, you risk flooding the atomizer and getting e-liquid on your hands. With a squonk mod, leaking is rare because squeezing the bottle creates a vacuum that sucks the excess e-liquid out of the atomizer. If you squeeze the bottle a bit too aggressively, it’s not a problem; the extra e-liquid will return to the bottle.

How Do I Use a Squonk Mod?

When it comes to setting up and using your squonk mod, you’ll do most of the things that you currently do. A modern regulated squonk mod has the same user-friendly interface as other high-end vaping devices. Modern squonk mods also have the same features as other regulated box mods, including variable wattage, temperature control, short circuit detection, overheating detection and more. The internal bottle, however, is the thing that makes a squonk mod different. You can usually access the bottle in a squonk mod by opening the battery door. Pull the bottle straight down to remove it from the device. Fill the bottle and push it straight up to get it back into the body of the mod.

To wet your atomizer, squeeze the bottle gently through the hole in the side of the mod. Squeezing the bottle sends e-liquid through the hole in the middle of the atomizer’s threading, wetting the cotton wick. Release the bottle to draw the excess e-liquid back through the tube. Vape as normal, squeezing the bottle gently after every two or three puffs.

Do Squonk Mods Have Any Drawbacks?

In the recent past, squonk mods had a serious drawback in that the majority of them were unregulated mechanical mods with no safety features. Most of the e-cigarette battery explosions that have occurred during vaping have happened with mechanical mods. The only people who should be using mechanical mods are those who are willing to become intimately familiar with the best battery safety practices. For the rest of us, it’s best to have vaping devices with intelligent programming that looks out for our safety automatically. Today, every major vaping product manufacturer carries at least one regulated squonk mod with full safety features.

Squonk mods do have an additional problem, though, and it’s one that seems impossible to resolve. Since squonk mods have bottles of e-liquid on the inside, they’re big. A single-battery squonk mod is as large as a dual-battery mod without a squonk bottle. A dual-battery squonk mod is too large to fit comfortably in a pocket. If you absolutely require a vaping device with portability and great battery life, a squonk mod may not be the right device for you.
