Every relationship has its ups and downs. Unhappy relationships, however, tend to have an entirely different set of downturns. These are 8 signs that you might be in an unhappy relationship.

1. You don’t have a say in your relationship

When you don't have a say in your relationship, it means that you are not being listened to or taken seriously by your partner. You may feel like you can't make decisions for yourself without their approval and support.

If this sounds like your situation, it may be time to sit down and talk through some of these issues with your significant other. If they're willing to listen and work on it together, then you can keep moving forward with your relationship. But if they refuse to work on it or don't care about what you're saying, then it might be time for both of you to move on.

2. You don't feel like they understand you

When you don't feel like your partner understands, it could mean that you're in an unhappy relationship. A recent study found that couples who reported more feelings of being understood by their partners were less likely to report overall dissatisfaction with their relationships.

So why is it important to be understood? The researchers found that those who felt misunderstood by their partners were more likely to experience stress, anxiety and depression when compared with those who felt understood. These negative emotions can lead to a strain on the relationship overall, especially if one or both partners are experiencing them at the same time. In fact, feeling misunderstood was found to be one of the strongest predictors of whether or not a couple would break up over time!

3. They don't make time for you

Making time for your partner is one of the most important things you can do to keep them happy and healthy. It's important to be able to talk about your day, share your thoughts and feelings, and just spend some time together.

If your partner is always too busy with work or friends, then this could be a sign that they don't care about you as much as they should. They may also feel like they are not getting enough attention from you, which can lead them to seek it elsewhere.

So, it's important that both of you make sure that you are spending quality time together each week so that there isn't any resentment building up between the two of you over time because of lack of communication which could lead to even more problems down the road if left unchecked!

4. They are always putting themselves first

The problem with relationships is that we often put our partners before ourselves, and we expect them to return the favor. However, if your partner is more concerned about their own needs and wants than yours, it may be time to reevaluate whether or not this relationship is right for you.

If your partner constantly puts themselves first, it can quickly become tiring and difficult to deal with. If not, then maybe it's time for both of you to move on from this relationship altogether.

5. They don't listen to your problems, or even care about them

 When you're in a relationship, it's important to feel like your partner is listening to you—and even more so when you're having a problem. If your partner isn't really listening to your problems and concerns, it could be a sign that there are bigger issues at play.

This also means that if your partner doesn't care about what's bothering you, it can be hard to feel like they truly love and respect you. And not caring about the things that are bothering you, could not help them to understand you and in turn could not help you to solve your problems.

That’s why it's important for couples to be able to talk through their problems together as a team. When one person tries to solve problems alone, it can cause distance between partners which can make the relationship unhappy.

6. They treat other people better than they treat you

It's not uncommon for people to be nice to others around them, but when your partner is kind and polite to everyone except for you, it's a sign that there's something wrong. In fact, the way they treat other people is often a reflection of how they feel about themselves—and if they're not treating you well, it's because they don't think you deserve it.

It might sound like a simple fix: Just tell them! But it's much more complicated than that. In many cases, the person who is being treated poorly doesn't realize that they're being treated poorly because their partner has been successful at hiding it from them (and perhaps even from themselves.)

If this sounds like your situation, don't worry! There are plenty of ways to approach this situation with tact and sensitivity—though it may take some time before you can get your partner to admit what's really going on.

7. They are abusive towards you physically or emotionally

When you're in an abusive relationship, the first thing that happens is that your self-esteem gets beaten down. However if this persists you learn to take the abuse and accept it as normal. 

What’s worse is that if you're in an abusive relationship, it can sometimes be hard to recognize that the person you love is mistreating you. Abusers often try to convince their partners that they're the ones who are being abused, or that they're somehow responsible for their partner's behavior.

Being in an abusive relationship can also cause a lot of damage to your mental health. So, if you notice any of these signs and suspect your partner is being abusive towards you physically or emotionally, it's important that you seek help from someone who can help you get out of the relationship safely.

8. They have cheated on you

If they have cheated on you, it could be a sign of their unhappiness with the relationship or their commitment to you. It might also mean that they are not ready for a committed relationship and are looking for something else.

Cheating is often an indication that you are in an unhealthy relationship, but it is not always the case. Some people cheat because they are trying to find happiness outside of their marriage or because they feel trapped in a bad relationship.

However, if your partner has cheated on you, it is important to talk about what happened and try to figure out why this happened so you can both move forward together. It's not impossible if both of you communicate and solve things together.

It's tempting to want to blame yourself for your unhappiness, but a healthier approach is to take an honest evaluation of the relationship you're in and how your partner responds to your needs. If you feel exhausted, sad, or unappreciated, it may be time to consider whether this is a relationship you deserve.
